Netflix Guilty Pleasures: River Monsters

I am a strong supporter of Netflix as well as their streaming capabilities that has spread to most gaming consoles. We have a Wii and take full advantage  of having hundreds of movies and tv series at our fingertips. I’m a bit of a sucker for documentary type programs. One of my recent obsessions has been a show called River Monsters. This show featured Jeremy Wade, a biologist and extreme fisherman seeking out  the most deadly and intimidating fresh water fish around the globe. From piranhas to monstrous man eating catfish, Jeremy takes you along on his journey to explain the fish’s behavior, then to actually catch one to take a look at up close.  I initially watched an episode because I though it may be somewhat interesting, however  I found the show quite compelling. The combination of profiling the fish, history, listening to eyewitness accounts of people’s horrifying run-ins with these creatures, as well as Jeremy’s deep respect for the fish, whenever possible releasing the fish after capture.  Until I began watching this series I typically associated the word “fish” as a portion of menu items I don’t often indulge in. Now after a horrifying episode set on the Amazon river  where a small species of catfish (still shockingly 6 inches long) swam up into a man’s penis and had to be surgically removed, I have a much much deeper respect for fish of all varieties including the  450 lb. monsters with horrific teeth as well as the smallest ones that can literally eat you from the inside out.

River Monsters proves to be a compelling engaging series that is sure to make you hold on a little tighter the next time you find yourself in a boat. Check it out!
